Sonicbar SH-153 Exit bar
The hardware is an integral part of the special purpose door assembly and must be supplied by the door manufacturer. Protective Door Industries (PDI) manufactures its’ own proprietary brand of Sonicbar hardware – latchsets and hinges -- to withstand the blast criteria on pressure doors and handle the door thickness and weight on all special purpose door systems. On a blast resistant door, PDI analyzes and certifies the whole assembly – door panel, frame and hardware – to protect lives and equipment against the occurrence of a blast event.
Airtight doors, 4” and 6” thick acoustical doors and heavy industrial type doors with special requirements also contain Sonicbar hardware. PDI performs a bench test on every door prior to shipping for fit-up and operational check. The doors are then normally shipped with the mortise hardware installed with the trim packed separately to prevent damage in shipping. Due to the custom nature of these assemblies, PDI’s hardware cannot be purchased on its’ own unless the request is for replacement hardware on a PDI manufactured door system. With minimal maintenance, the hardware will last for many years.
Sonicbar Latchsets
PDI’s very low range blast resistant door units utilize heavy-duty builders’ hardware where PDI adds extra reinforcement to the latchset. The inactive leaf of pair will contain manual flush bolts also factory modified. Some manufacturers do not take this extra quality step and may jeopardize the integrity of their door system.
PDI’s Sonicbar SH-153 and SH-154 Series hardware is engineered to work with every range of blast resistant, 4” and 6” thick acoustical door systems, heavy industrial type assemblies in addition to corrosive or explosion proof environments. SS stainless steel trim in US32D is the standard finish. Both latching devices are usually furnished as fully concealed (operating mechanism within door) or due to special requirements or door construction are surface mounted.

Sonicbar SH-153 Series horizontal latching device is standard on single swing doors and active leaves of pairs. This latchset contains horizontal slam-action latch bolt(s) and usually specified to be self-closing with automatic latching (with door closer). The number of latch pins is governed by the design criteria on pressure doors, normally single or 2-point – NO archaic 3-point surface mounted latchset. The force required to open and operate the door is engineered to be as minimum as possible. Many functions are available, comparable to the most commonly specified functions of builders’ hardware. The SH-153 pre-engineered functions include latching, locking, exit bar operation and the equivalent of an electric strike.
Sonicbar SH-154 Series contains vertical latching with manually operated latch bolts. The SH-154 device is normally used on the inactive leaf of pair of doors, but may be used on a single door and both leaves of pair when required.
The hardware schedule should simply designate the special purpose door manufacturer to supply the appropriate latchset. But, additional details such as the locking function (i.e. passage, storeroom or classroom) as well as the hardware trim should be specified. PDI’s hardware is normally supplied with lever handle both sides /or/ lever x exit bar device on egress doors. A common ledger description for a single out-swing personnel door may be:
SH-153PC x lever x exit bar device x RHRB x key cylinder (prep) x classroom function x SS trim x US32D finish.
For additional functions, such as electrified locking, electric or pneumatic automatic power operation, etc., consult with
PDI’s technical staff.

Sonicbar Hinges
PDI offers its’ line of heavy-duty steel hinges to carry the weight of the special purpose doors. PDI determines and supplies the type of Sonicbar hinge(s) based on blast criteria, acoustical door design, door size, thickness and weight.
Common hinge types are:
▪ Continuous hinge
▪ Sonicbar SH Series 6-way adjustable hinges SH-460 half-mortise and SH-461 surface mounted
▪ Adhaco 6-way adjustable hinge
▪ Special PDI brand SS butt hinges
▪ And steel block hinges for massive doors.
Frames and door leaves are factory prepped for hinges. Properly adjusted, PDI’s hinges will provide smooth and reliable door operation for many years of trouble-free service.
Continuous Hinge
Full mortise continuous hinges made to match the full height of the door and distribute door weight are well suited for
PDI’s lighter door panels. Available in carbon steel with USP finish or SS stainless steel Type 304, the hinge leaves come in thicker steel gauges ranging from 7ga. to 11ga. Many sites are in close proximity to the coastline and to avoid risk of corrosion,
PDI will commonly select SS stainless steel material for these applications. Hinges are factory fitted at factory and supplied with required fasteners to ensure a smooth installation at job-site.

SH-460 or SH-461 Adjustable Hinges
Right or Left ↔ , In or Out ∕ , Up or Down ↨ . . . these adjustments are possible with PDI’s Sonicbar SH-460 half mortise or SH-461 full surface hinges utilized on the mid to high range blast and acoustical door units. With PDI’s SH Series hinges, only Allen wrenches are needed to shift the door into position. When a high or uneven sill or a sag in the frame head interferes with proper alignment, the door can be raised or lowered, or adjusted in another direction to compensate for field conditions.
A unique feature of these hinges is a Teflon self-aligning bearing assuring free-swinging doors and no need for lubrication. The self-aligning Teflon bearing automatically compensates for misalignment without shimming and allows for proper door operation with less effort and unnecessary wear on the hinges.
See the ‘Installation / Adjustment Procedures’ to perform maintenance on PDI’s SH adjustable hinges and should they ever need replacement, fill out the SH hinge drawing sheet and submit to PDI at sales@protectivedoor.com.
Weatherstripping / Astragal / Threshold Arrangement
Being commonly installed at industrial sites or military operations, lighter weight commercial weatherstripping can get abused. For this reason, PDI manufactures its’ own heavy-duty all steel gasketing arrangement comprising of PDI Models H-280W-SS weatherstripping, H-220 astragal along with H-344 sill wiper seal. The H-280W-SS housing is fabricated from sturdy 14ga. SS stainless steel for durability and rust prevention – no need to paint – especially suitable for demanding conditions along the coastline where many PDI doors are installed. The seals are adjustable with laser slotted holes and supplied with SS fasteners. All seals include closed cell sponge neoprene to provide solid compression between frame and door perimeter, meeting style or sill. As a standard, PDI factory preps the frame to receive the retainers for quick installation. Thresholds are also part of the weatherstripping package and various types are available; contact PDI at sales@protectivedoor.com for more details.
